Green tips while you’re staying at Wytch Wood

We are committed to helping you have a greener camping trip.

Here are our top tips for keeping it green while you are staying at Wytch Wood.

Campfires

We love cooking over a real flame, it’s a fundamental part of the experience heere at Wytch Wood so we aren’t going to suggest you cut these out. But, you can be mindful about what you are burning.

You are welcome to bring your own wood and charcoal on your stay but we ask that you do not burn treated wood as it releases chemicals into the air and soil. We do provide firewood that is harvested and seasoned sustainably from damaged diseased or dead trees from the woods right here on site.

BBQs

Charcoal is not subject to the same sustainability rules as firewood so it’s important to be careful about the provenance of what you buy – it may be from unsustainable sources, not to mention the miles it has been transported.

We sell local sustainable charcoal and other UK produced charcoal can be found in local outlets like farm shops. You shouldn’t ever need to use disposable BBQs at Wytch Wood as each pitch comes with its own bbq or grill.

Cooking on Gas

Try to use refillable gas canisters. Disposable gas canisters are super convenient, but are quite hard to recycle. We also find a lot of the smaller cans are not fully used either when they are left by the bins – so they aren’t cost effective either!

Recycle your Waste

Recycle while you’re at Wytch Wood. We provide a food waste bin and tub to collect your recycling for each pitch, so you can easily carry over to our sorting station. Please please use these during your stay to help recycle as much as possible.

All food waste, paper and cardboard is composted on site and we recycle glass, plastic bottles and containers, tetra packs (like juice cartons), batteries and gas cans. Nappies and plastic films are some of the only things that should go in the black bin bags.

Cut down food waste

Since we opened, food waste has been a really frustrating problem. We have introduced a new communal fridge and freezer for cool box ice packs to help you keep food fresh.

We also ask that any uneaten food at the end of your stay is given to one of the Wytch Wood team to dispose of rather than thrown away. And finally, any food waste you do need to throw away can be composted. We give each pitch a food waste bin that can be emptied into the main bin during your stay.

Use Biodegradable Cleaning Products

We provide cleaning products from Green Bear, a UK eco-friendly supplier, for you to use during your stay – including washing up liquid and anti-bacterial spray. We also provide lovely Faith in Nature products for you to use in the showers.

All our waste water goes into soakaways and into the ground, so it’s really important that you don’t use any products with harsh chemicals that could pollute the site.

Keep hot water usage to a minimum

As we are primarily off grid, we have to use gas to heat water for the showers and washups. We request that to help us keep gas usage to a minimum that you take short showers and don’t leave the hot tap running for rinsing.

Keep it local

Explore locally from Wytch Wood campsite – walking and cycling. Look what’s in the area. Shop and eat locally – reduce food miles and support the local economy.
