Horses, helicopters and heritage cars around Somerset

Horses, helicopters and cars – not an obvious combination, but something quite common around Somerset and Wytch Wood Camping. These industries are situated just over the hill from Wytch Wood and are a short drive or reasonable walk away.

Chard Equestrian Somerset

Chard Equestrian is a huge equestrian competition venue, regularly hosting some of the top UK and international riders, as well as lots of grassroots events.

They hold dressage competitions, show jumping and eventing throughout the year and there will more than likely be competitions going on during your visit. There is a large indoor viewing area with a cafe so you can watch the competition in comfort.

Historic Helicopters in Somerset

Some of the oldest flying helicopters in the world are based at Historic Helicopters and you will almost certainly see some of them out flying during your stay. Historic Helicopters was established in 2013 to preserve, restore and operate a select fleet of vintage Military Helicopters.

They hold occasional open days and air shows, so it’s worth checking out if there is anything on when you stay. Sometimes you can get shown around the hangar, so it’s worth asking if you visit.

A little further afield from Wytch Wood

Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton – 17 miles

More helicopters!

Home to Europe’s largest naval aircraft collection, you can explore over 100 aircraft and millions of artefacts, documents and objects.

You can climb aboard an original Concorde prototype and view helicopters from the neighbouring RNAS Yeovilton on manoeuvres. Plus if you book online, you’ll save on the ticket price too – check opening times and book here.

Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford – 21 Miles

There is also an outdoor kart track for older petrolheads! Again, tickets are cheaper if you book in advance – check opening times and prices here.

Both Haynes and Fleet Air Arm Museum are free for the whole year after your first visit, so don’t worry if you don’t get around the whole thing!

We’ll be adding to our travel guide – are there any indoor days out in South Somerset, West Dorset or East Devon that you’d recommend?

Follow us on Instagram or Facebook for more updates.

Our aim at Wytch Wood is to bring diversity, sustainability and flexibility to camping and glamping, making it possible for us to offer an alternative experience of camping to our guests.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful countryside we have in Somerset, so we are making larger, more private pitches for you.

Amazing quiet and peaceful site with only twelve pitches, each with their own loo. Showers and washing up areas very clean. There is an 'honesty shop' which was very useful and the host Elise was so helpful and welcoming. Thoroughly recommend if you are looking for a peaceful break.

We absolutely love Wytch Wood campsite. It is our favorite campsite of the UK and we have been here 3 times yet because of that. Elise is a wonderful host, makes you feel very welcome. The site is beautiful and all the activities (yoga, workshops for children/adults, pizza night) are great. Her staff is very friendly & helpful. And last but not least…so many lovely animals in the field and their own ‘fairytale like’ forrest (sheep, horses, bats, deer, owls). Fantastic! Would really recommend staying here.

Wauw wauw wauw. We’ll be back!

This spot is absolutely gorgeous! It's ideal for tents or smaller camper vans, and I loved how quiet and picturesque it was. Such a lovely place to relax and enjoy the scenery. Highly recommend!

Beautiful location and wonderful low-impact facilities. We loved the pizza, foraging for wild strawberries, paddling in the stream and lying in hammocks in the woods. One of the best campsites we’ve ever been to.

This campsite is fantastic! We had a lovely pitch right by the stream and enjoyed the fire pit. The facilities were excellent with compost toilets at each pitch. Unfortunately, we missed out on the pizza, coffee shop and bar as they were closed during our visit outside of school holidays and during the working week. We highly recommend this site.

As others have said, it's a lovely secluded place and well kept. Camping area surrounded by trees. Kids can run about. Facilities are great for a low impact site; hot water, shelters and pizza preordered etc.
